Essay: The 1480 Distinguished by its Bold rectangular design and massive double fluted lugs, this rare 1940's Patek Philippe timepiece is a sought-after example. Its rarity lies in the fact that only approximately 200 watches were made at the time, with only 40 pink gold examples identified to date.
Between the 1930s and 1950s, Patek Philippe produced a significant range of rectangular-cased watches. They were fitted with either round movements, or more notably, as with this example, an exquisite rectangular "tonneau" caliber 9’’’90. This post art-modern design also features a thick and flat glass with overhanging edges and scalloped-shaped lugs, that is known as ‘thick lugs’ between collectors, due to its prominent twin shape lugs.
Another notable feature about this piece, is the lavish pink champagne dial made by Stern Freres. The unique “pink on pink” combination is an aesthetic exclusive to only a handful of timepieces in the collection. The case features a Patek Philippe stamped gold case made by Georges Croisier, as marked by the Geneva master case maker key number 5 on the back.
